“Winning Techniques” with “Cajun” Phil and Capt. Kevin Broussard

Winning Combo

If you’re a diehard fisherman like me, you’re in for a treat.  I’m always looking for that edge, to take my fishing to the next level and every little bit of information I can gather helps me get higher on the ladder of success.

As promised, Tournament Redfisher is bringing you “Winning Techniques”  by “Cajun” Phil and Capt. Kevin Broussard.  “Cajun” was gracious enough to send over the “winning techniques” file.I know what you’re thinking…..

They have it written down? Cool!

About 6 years ago, “Cajun” and Capt. Kevin were tearing up the redfish scene and everyone wanted to know, what they were doing to be so successful.  They both sat down and graciously put their championship proven “Winning Techniques” on paper.  Capt. Kevin has been a guide on Calcasieu Lake for over 20 years and “Cajun” Phil has been in front of the camera filming “Outdoors and Fishin” since 1968.  That’s a whole lotta experience for this winning team.  “Team Broussard” has 22 top 10 finishes and 17 top Five finishes in the last 5 years.  Their top 5 and top 10 finishes were not won fishing in small local tournaments, but in more high-profile tournaments with tough competition.  These guys have the goods!  They have been “Team of the Year” more than once, and “Redfish Cup Champions”!  They got credibility, that’s for sure! So how did they accomplish their tournament success?

“Cajun” Phil and Capt. Kevin say, “For all those anglers out there that are thinking about getting into Tournament fishing, well let’s just say that its Fun, it’s exciting, and if you put in a lot of hard work, it can be very rewarding.”  I’m not as successful in the tournament world as these guys, but I’m doing exactly what they did long ago…..They put in their time! They fished hard!  They payed attention!  Put in their hard work,  and gathered as much information as possible from tournament anglers like David Fritz, Zell Roland, Gerald Swindle, Peter T., Judy Wong, Roland Martin, Bill Dance, Hank Parker, and Jimmy Houston to name a few.  After talking to these fellow anglers, “Cajun” Phil and Capt. Kevin came up with their 10 Commandments for Tournament Success.

“10 Commandments for Tournament Success

  • Make a Commitment: If you’re going to do it. Do it right.
  • Want to Win:  We have a great desire to WIN every tournament we enter.
  • Have a Game Plan:  We go into every event with a game plan, where to go, what to throw, and we have a Plan A, a Plan B and so on…
  • Have Confidence:  You must be confident that you can and will win, have no doubts at all.
  • Team Work:  No heros, you must be willing to work together, win or lose.  No complaining or finger-pointing what so ever. “Teamwork”, the difference in Winning and Loosing…
  • Concentrate and Stay Focused:  You must leave all problems behind you, no time to worry about anything but the task of winning.
  • Make It Fun:  You must have fun & enjoy tournament fishing or you will get all stressed out.
  • Be Prepared:  Before leaving for a tournament, We have everything in order, a check list is gone over & over to make sure we have everything we will need. Nets, scales, oxygen bottle, tackle, and so on.  We also bring back-ups.
  • Never Give Up:  Remember that many tournaments have been won on the last cast or two, it’s never over til’ all the fish are weighed in.
  • Trust in the Lord:  We ask the Lord to help us get to our destination & back safely, and to help us make the right decisions on where to go & what to throw. Then it’s up to us…We Trust in the Lord.
These guys are just amazing, and they play to win.  Read Tournament Redfisher’s “Q&A with Cajun Phil Broussard” and  get to know “Cajun” Phil a little better.  If you are ever in the vicinity of Lake Charles, give Capt. 1. I am a personal friend of Cajun Phil and Captain Kevin. I have fished with Kevin several times over the past 15 years. I have never and probably never will fish with anyone as knowledgeable as Capt. Kevin. If you want to have a trip of a life time and take lots of fillets home call Kevin and book a trip.I drive from central Florida every year and have never went home empty handed.
